The Woodward Public Library is seeking a creative, energetic, and enthusiastic individual to serve as the Youth Services Librarian.  This Part-Time position will lead in person programs for children of all ages (toddler to teens), develop, select, organize, evaluate, and maintain the youth collections: as well assist with community-wide programs, outreach, and apply for grants.

Qualifications:

Successful candidate should have a two or four year-degree in a related field or appropriate combination of education and experience.  Previous experience working with young children is required and library experience a plus.

Hours of work:

15 hours/week, some evenings and weekends

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title: Youth Services Librarian

 

General Description:  Plans, promotes, and implements programs and services for children and teens under the supervision of the Library Director.

 

Duties:

1.   Plans and conducts early literacy story hour on a weekly basis.

2.   Plans and conducts a summer library program for children ages 0-teens.

3.   Plans and conducts children’s/teen/family programs throughout the year.

4.   Creates special displays and bulletin boards that encourages reading.

5.   Assists in the selection of special performers in conjunction with summer reading and guests

      for Early-Out Program, and other events.

6.   Assists library patrons in finding materials they want, answering reference questions,

      providing reader’s advisory, computer assistances, making copies, and faxing.

7.   Plans for and orders craft supplies and any other items needed for children’s programming.

8.   Composes and prepares public relations materials such as news releases, flyers, brochures,

      etc. clearing them with the library director before they are printed or put to the public.

9.   Assists in maintaining up-to-date children’s and teen’s collections.

10. Explains and assists patrons in the use of OPAC.

11. Answers inquiries on the telephone and in person.

12. Reads and responds to correspondence and email pertaining to youth services.

13. Compiles statistics on attendance of all youth programs throughout the year for the Monthly

      Snapshot, Director’s Report, Annual Survey, and Summer Library Program.

14. Selects, prepares, and works with team to set up Story Walk each month.

15. Works Circulation Desk as needed: check out, check in, issue cards, etc. and related duties as

       required.

16. Deals tactfully and courteously with the public.  Upholds all confidentially rights of patrons

      and patron records.

17. Upholds established library policies and procedures.

18. Works closely with the library director in planning programs and maintains and effective

       working relationship with fellow staff members.  Has a cooperative team spirit.

19.  Builds and maintains active community partnership.

20.  Uses library provided means for continuing education and training.  Attends training,

       workshops, conferences, and other continuing education related to youth services as

       approved by the director.

21.  Flexible with work hours.  Some evenings and Saturdays may be required.

 

Knowledge and abilities:

1.  Knowledge on how to conduct story hour, crafts, and activities appropriate for age, using

     stories, songs, action rhymes, etc.

2.  Ability to organize, plan and conduct programs for the entire year, well in advance of carrying

     them out.

3.  Experience with Windows operating systems and computer skills.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

1.  High school diploma or G.E.D.

2.  State Library Certification of PLM or PLS (currently held or acquired within two years of

     employment.

3.  Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

4.  Interacts well with children.

5.  Demonstrates organizational skills.

6.  Flexible work hours.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

1.  Prior experience in library services.

2.  Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in education or equivalent, with course work in library science.

 

Physical Requirements:

1.  Frequent need to see, walk, sit, stand, talk, and hear.

2.  Intermittent physical activities including bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, and prolong

     periods of sitting.

3.  Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.

4.  Dexterity to perform data entry on a computer, laptop, iPad, or other electronic device.

5.  Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, push full carts.  Ability to lift and carry

     objects weighing up to 10 lbs. and lifting 20 lbs. maximum.
