Woodward, Iowa Family Services Librarian

(Part-time)

Do you love working with children, teens, families, and love libraries? We are looking for
someone motivated and flexible to join our team as a Family Services Librarian! We can help
train. High School diploma required (Bachelor’s preferred) plus two years’ experience with
children and teens.


Woodward is just 15-20 miles NE of Des Moines with a small town feel (pop. 1346).


Essential Functions:


1. Plan and implement weekly Afterschool programs throughout the school year.
2. Plan and implement monthly/bimonthly Family programs.
3. Plan and implement monthly teen programs.
4. Plan and implement a variety of youth programs throughout the year, including but not limited
to the Summer Reading Program, for early literacy, children, and teens.
5. Prepare displays and promotional materials for youth and family programs.
6. Work with the Director to select and maintain library materials for youth.
7. Help develop and maintain inviting and functional youth library areas.
8. Represent the library at various community events.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Family Services Librarian
General Description: Plans, promotes, and implements programs and services for children and
teens, and families under the supervision of the Library Director.


Duties:
1. Plans, advertises, and conducts early literacy story hour on a weekly basis. **
2. Plans, advertises, and conducts a summer library for children ages 2-teens.
3. Plans, advertises, and conducts Afterschool program weekly during school year in
conjunction with the school calendar.
4. Introduces books to encourage reading and checking out during Afterschool program
5. Plans, advertises and conducts children/teen/family programs monthly throughout the
year.
6. Creates special displays and bulletin boards that encourages reading. *
7. Assist in the selection of special performers in conjunction with summer reading and
guests for Early-Out Program, Summer Reading, and other events.
8. Plans for and provides a list of needed supplies/items needed for Youth and Family
Programs in a timely manner.
9. Prepares public relations materials such as news releases, flyers, brochures, etc. clearing
with the director before they are put before the public. *
10. Assists in maintaining up-to-date children’s and teen collections. *
11. Reads and responds to correspondence and email pertaining to family services.
12. Selects, prepares, and works with team to set up Story Walk each month.
13. Compiles statistics on attendance of all Family Programs throughout the year for the
Monthly Snapshot, Director’s Report, Annual Survey, and Summer Library Program.
14. Explains and assists patrons in the use of OPAC.
15. Assists library patrons in finding materials they want, answering reference questions,
providing reader’s advisory, computer assistances, making copies, and faxing.
16. Answers inquiries on the telephone and in person.
17. Works Circulation Desk as needed: check out, check in, issue cards, etc. and related
duties as required.
18. Deals tactfully and courteously with the public. Upholds all confidentially rights of
patrons and patron records.
19. Upholds established library policies and procedures.
20. Works closely with the library director in planning programs and maintains an effective
working relationship with fellow staff members and has a cooperative team spirit.
21. Builds and maintains active community partnerships.
22. Continues each year education and training related to the library and youth services by
the means of workshops, conferences, other continuing education avenues, a minimum of
five hours per year. This may be scheduled during scheduled work hours.
23. Flexible work hours. Some evenings and Saturdays may be required.
24. All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and abilities:
1. Knowledge on how to conduct story hour, crafts, and activities appropriate for age, using
stories, songs, action rhymes, etc.
2. Ability to organize, plan and conduct programs for the entire year, well in advance of carrying
them out.
3. Experience with Windows operating systems and computer skills.

Minimum Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or G.E.D.
2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
3. Interacts well with children.
4. Demonstrates organizational skills.
5. Flexible work hours.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Prior experience in library services.
2. Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in education or equivalent, with course work in library
science.
Physical Requirements:
1. Frequent need to see, walk, sit, stand, talk, and hear.
2. Intermittent physical activities including bending, reaching, crouching, kneeling, and
prolonged periods of sitting.
3. Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
4. Dexterity to perform data entry on a computer, laptop, iPad, or other electronic device.
5. Physical dexterity to reach shelves of various heights, push full carts. Ability to lift and carry
objects weighing up to 10 lbs. and lifting 20 lbs. maximum.
